A trilogy of tragedy…

The phone rings in the middle of the night. The doorbell rings at the strangest time of the day. Work is interrupted with a frantic message to get home or to the hospital as soon as possible. The culprit is tragedy. It knows no bounds, works on no clock and respects no person or situation. As a thief, it steals at the most inopportune moments of our lives Really, there is no good time, for none would pick to ever be its victim. Yet, tragedy cares not about your wishes. It strikes with vengeance. I write this fresh off a day of tragic news. Last night, the leaders of our student ministries received a middle of the night visit from law enforcement to inform them that the wife’s father had been fatally wounded in a criminal homicide, crashing his vehicle into a...

Do you need a little fear to have big faith?

So I’m a pastor. This means I’m supposed to write these words with confidence and faith, knowing God will work all things out, and there is no reason to ever fear or worry. While that may be the genuine pastorly response, I’ve got an opinion it’s not the truth. All people live with a level of fear. Moses, Joshua, Samuel, Paul, Peter, Jeremiah, David – the greatest leaders of the Bible possessed a type of fear many times directly related to the greatest blessing God poured out in their life. Moses feared speaking; God sent him to Pharaoh to release the people from Egypt. Joshua was a mighty warrior, but needed God’s assurance to go with him. Paul (Saul) trembled before God in direct confrontation with his past mistakes. Jeremiah...

The Problem in Sumner County is not the ACLU

By Kris Freeman Revolution Church White House, TN I am a graduate of the Sumner County School system, have lived in this county for 29 years of my life, and have pastored a new church which meets weekly in a Sumner County elementary school for the last 17 months. But my qualifications to write are not those things; I am writing as a parent of two children in the Sumner County School system, and as an advocate to many friends and family wondering how a recent decision shapes our faith. Our local school system settled out of court facing litigation brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), concerning the practice and promotion of Christian-based activities within our schools. Let me be clear – I believe there were alleged elements in the lawsuit...

An open letter to Revolution Church…

I wrote this Monday, but Noah spilled Coke Zero on my laptop right in the middle of it, so I had to do a bit of editing and recovery. Sit back and relax, because it’s probably the longest blog or letter I’ve written at Revolution. Yeah, I talk a lot. Get over it. Wow, our God is an awesome God. I want to take time and talk to you for a moment. This is not a sermon or a certified business letter. I’m just going to let my heart spill out about Revolution Church and what is ahead for an amazing move of God. On January 1, 2012, Revolution Church will have completed a 16-month journey at H.B. Williams Elementary School, and launch our first service in our new facility, a partnership with Trinity Fellowship Church in White House. Everything is about...

Are you willing to let anyone go?

“The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. Ho does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” – 2 Peter 3:9 (NLT) This may be the hardest blog I’ve ever written. Funny thing – the practical elements of it aren’t that difficult. It’s not about marketing, promotion, or clever ideas in production and worship. There are no video announcements, building decisions or creative serve ideas to fill the page. This blog is about what each and every one of us should be about as followers of Jesus Christ – and that is telling others about the good news that is the Gospel of Jesus. Jesus died to save sinners. Where in the modern world...

Wow! Listen to how the Holy Spirit works…

Today, I was researching old services at Revolution Church to run DVD copies to send to a family member in another state of one of our church members. I randomly clicked (online) on a previous service and began to listen. It’s from July 31, 2011. As God always does, He confirms His Word and His vision. Listen to this quote from the sermon, and think about what happened this week. “I want you to know something. The day comes when Revolution Church connects to a building, we are not going to lose the connection of the ‘what’ to the ‘why.’ We are not going to stop serving just because we have a place to meet on Sunday for church. If God gives us, and grants to us, and opens the door for us to a brand new facility for the future, we are going to turn...

Field of Dreams

If you want to know how Revolution Church will be moving into a building on January 1, 2012, sit back. I’m a writer, and I am going to tell you a long story. You’ll see the connection and understand how it happened. http://www.vimeo.com/30655550 Eighteen years ago, I graduated high school and began college and a new career in sports writing. Growing up in Sumner County, I had attended Portland High School and graduated in 1993, but never got to officially play football or baseball because of serious health concerns related to a benign bone tumor in my left knee, and later a diagnosis of type one diabetes. But I was very good at broadcasting and writing, and that was my future. But the local newspaper hired me part-time and sent me to cover my first...
